CSCS Cards

This card is for people who are working through probationary periods while employers assess their suitability for employment. You can only apply for a provisional card if you have not held a CSCS card before and this card can only be applied for once.

Card Requirements
Applicants must have passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the past two years.

This card lasts for six months and is not renewable. Before it expires Provisional card holders must achieve or be registered for a recognised construction related qualification and apply for the appropriate CSCS card for their job.

The Labourer card is valid for five years. It is currently not possible to renew a Labourer card. However, you can apply for a new card when your existing card expires.

Card Requirements
All applicants must pass the CITB health, safety and environment test for operatives and hold one of the following:

An RQF Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment. RQF Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment
An SCQF Level 5 REHIS Elementary Health and Safety Certificate.
The NOCN/ CSkills Awards Construction Health and Safety unit
A CSCS approved alternative qualification. Alternative qualifications with an expiry date can only be used once, so you will need to retake these qualifications in the future when you renew your Labourer card.

This card is available to people who are registered on a recognised apprenticeship. It is valid for four years and six months and cannot be renewed. Cardholders are expected to complete their apprenticeship by the time the card expires and apply for a skilled CSCS card.

Card Requirements
To apply for this card you will be required to submit evidence that you are registered for an apprenticeship and that you have passed a CITB Health, Safety and Environment test link, or completed a CSCS-recognised health and safety course.

The card is valid for three years and cannot be renewed. Cardholders are expected to complete their qualification by the time the card expires and apply for a skilled CSCS card.

Card Requirements
This card is available specifically to Supervisors, Managers and Technical Workers with on the job experience (normally at least one year in the last three) whom are registered to a complete a Construction Related Technical, Supervisory or Management NVQ or SVQ at Level 3 or higher, which is acceptable for a CSCS card.

Applicants must also have passed the appropriate level CITB Health, Safety and Environment test CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the last 2 years.
Experienced Worker - Technical, Supervisory or Management card applicants must be able to provide proof of registration onto their qualification.

The card is valid for one year and cannot be renewed. Cardholders are expected to complete their qualification by the time the card expires and apply for a skilled CSCS card.

Card Requirements
This temporary card is available specifically for workers with on the job experience (normally at least one year in the last three) who are registered to a complete a Construction Related NVQ or SVQ Level 2 or higher, which is acceptable for a CSCS card.

Applicants must also have passed the appropriate level CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the last 2 years. This must be taken at the relevant level for the occupation being applied for. To find out which level of test is required please use the official CSCS Card Finder

Experienced Worker card applicants must be able to provide proof of registration onto their NVQ/SVQ qualification.

Card Requirements
This card is available if you are a trainee and registered to complete a construction related qualification. The qualification may be academic, vocational or professional, but must be acceptable for a skilled CSCS card.

Applicants must also have passed the Operative level CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the last 2 years.

Trainee card applicants must be able to provide proof of registration onto their qualification. As a minimum, you are required to provide evidence from your University, Professional Body or qualification’s awarding body.

This card is valid for three years and cannot be renewed.

Card Requirements
It is available for learners who are undergoing a construction related qualification or training programme which requires the completion of a work placement, such as T-Levels or Trainee Skills Development Programmes.

To be eligible for this card, applicants must:
Be aged 16 or above.
Be registered onto a qualification or training programme requiring a minimum of 30 days’ work placement.

Have successfully passed the relevant Health, Safety and Environment Test within the last two years. For CSCS, SKILLcard and JIB-PMES, this will be the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Operative test.

If you are a trainee registered to complete a construction-related vocational or academic qualification* which is acceptable for a skilled CSCS card upon completion, you should apply for the Trainee card instead.

*(or hold professional membership with a CSCS recognised Professional Body at an accepted level, please visit the Card Finder to view accepted levels/bodies).

You can apply for this card if you have either:

Achieved a construction related NVQ or SVQ level 2 or completed an apprenticeship, such as an Employer sponsored apprenticeship, a City and Guilds of London Institute Craft Certificate or a CSCS Approved Trailblazer.

If you do not have these qualifications, but you are experienced in your job and have registered for a qualification applicable to your occupation, you may apply for an Experienced Worker Card.

Card Requirements
All applicants must have passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the last 2 years, at the relevant level for the occupation being applied for. To find out which level of test is required please use the official Card Finder

This card is available if you have either:

1. Achieved a Construction Related NVQ or SVQ level 3.

2. Completed an approved indentured apprenticeship (e.g.with NJCBI, BATJIC etc.)

3. Completed an employer sponsored apprenticeship which included the achievement of a City and Guilds of London Institute Advanced Craft Certificate.

This card is valid for five years.

This card is available for supervisor and technical occupations subject to the achievement of:

This card is available for manager and technical occupations subject to:

1. Achievement of a relevant Construction Management/Technical related NVQ/SVQ level 5, 6 or 7
2. A SVQ Level 4 in Construction Management/Technical related qualification or
3. Holding a pre-existing NVQ level 4 in construction management.

This card is valid for five years.

Card Requirements
All applicants must pass the CITB Managers and Professionals Health, Safety and Environment Test.

This card is available to people who have completed certain construction related degrees, HNDs, HNCs, CIOB Certificates and NEBOSH diplomas.

Card Requirements
Visit the CSCS Card Finder tool to find out if your academic qualification is accepted for the AQP card. Enter your qualification into Card Finder and follow the steps on screen.

To apply for the card, applicants will need to supply a copy of their qualification and where possible evidence of the units achieved within the qualification.

All applicants must pass the CITB Managers and Professionals Health, Safety and Environment Test.
NVQ’s
This card is valid for five years.

This card is available to competence assessed members of CSCS approved Professional Bodies.

This card is valid for five years.

All applicants must pass the CITB Managers and Professionals Health, Safety and Environment Test.

Card Requirements
Applicants will need to supply proof that they hold current membership of the professional body at a level accepted by CSCS, by providing one of the following (please note that membership is required to be renewed annually and the below evidence must confirm membership for the current calendar year and the level of membership held):

1. A membership certificate (which shows membership for the current calendar year)
2. A membership card (both sides, confirming membership for the current calendar year)
3. An up-to-date letter or email from the professional body confirming membership for the current calendar year
4. A receipt of payment for membership for the current calendar year.

This card cannot currently be renewed and once expired must be applied for as a new card application.
