CITB HS&E Test

  • The Operatives Test confirms that workers have the minimum level of Health, Safety and Environmental awareness they need to work on site.

It covers the 5 core knowledge areas; High Risk Activities; Legal and Management; Health and Welfare; Environment and General Safety.

  • This test covers the same five core areas but also includes questions on the following topics; Construction (design and management); Regulations; Demolition, and Highway Works.

  • These tests contain questions covering the 5 core knowledge areas, plus questions relevant to the selected specialism.

The Specialists test can be taken in the following topics; Demolition; Supervisory; Plumbing; Specialist Work at Height; Tunnelling; Highway Works; Lifts & Escalators; HVACR - Refrigeration & Air Conditioning; HVACE - Services & Facilities Maintenance; HVACR - Heating & Plumbing Services; HVACR - Ductwork & HVACR - Pipefitting & Welding.

The CITB Health, safety and environment (HS&E) test is an important way for construction workers to demonstrate that they can work safely on the job. It's also a way for them to know that their co- workers can work safely on the site and not put them at risk of injury. For employers, having workers who've passed the CITB HS&E test is assurance that their workforce are and can continue to be safe at work.

There are three types of HS&E test, please get in touch if you need any guidance on which test you need, call 01429 597990 or contact us.

The HS&E test consists of 50 questions from five core knowledge areas:

  • Legal and Management

  • Health and Welfare

  • General Safety

  • High Risk Activities

  • Environment.

Candidates have 45 minutes to answer the 50 questions. The test now includes new question styles. Behavioural case studies are also used in the test to check a candidate's understanding of health, safety and environmental issues, and how to behave safely on-site.

CITB is continually reviewing the test to ensure that it continues to help construction workers and employers get the right knowledge, skills and training to be able to work safely in the industry.

CSCS Cards

CSCS cards provide evidence that those working on construction sites have the appropriate training and qualifications for the job they do on site. The card plays its part in improving standards and safety on UK construction sites by ensuring the workforce are appropriately qualified.

There are 3 steps required to gain a CSCS card:

1. A recognised construction related qualification relevant to your occupation. – to check if CSCS accepts your qualification, you can use the CSCS Card Finder

2. Successful completion of the CITB Health, safety and environment (HS&E) test (link to our page)

3. Apply for relevant CSCS card.

As it is not a legal requirement, it is entirely up to the employer or contractor whether workers are required to hold a card before they are allowed on site. However, in the UK, most contractors and major house builders require construction workers on their sites to hold a valid card.

At Evolution Training and Consultancy Ltd we can help with all requirements to gain your CSCS Card.

A green Labourers card is often the quickest and most straight forward way to gain a CSCS card. It is designed for a worker who is employed to carry out various manual labour jobs on construction sites. It allows workers to perform tasks on sites at entry-level positions and is valid for 5 years. Our 1 Day health & Safety in construction course is recognised by CITB for those wishing to apply for a Green Labourers card.

You can sit your test at our dedicated CITB Approved Health Safety and Environment Testing centre at our site in Hartlepool. Then, on successful completion of both (or if you send us the evidence we require), our team can collate the information required and submit the card application on your behalf.

For more information on these courses, please contact our Commercial Team on 01429 597990 or contact us.
