A construction NVQ is a benchmark qualification that proves your occupational competence to current and future employers. They are a lifetime qualification, meaning once you earn it, no renewal is necessary.
NVQs are the most widely recognised qualifications in the construction industry. Giving an alternative route to accredited qualifications, they allow you to demonstrate their competence in the workplace, rather than in a classroom.
This allows you to gain qualifications without the need to take time off work, or study for a make-or-break exam! An assessor will visit you on-site, allowing you to continue earning whilst you progress, and removing the need for an employer to cover staff absence.
The number of visits an assessor needs to make depends on your experience. Higher-level supervisory NVQs may take more time to gather evidence, as you may be expected to demonstrate complex tasks whereas lower level NVQs involve more basic skills and can often be assessed more quickly.
Whilst the NVQ is a powerful thing to have, it will also allow you to gain a card that shows your competencies further. The major card schemes demanded by many employers in the construction industry all accept NVQs as evidence of competence when applying for their cards. These include Construction Skill Certification Skills Scheme (CSCS), the Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) and the National Plant Operators Registration Scheme (NPORS).
